Peter Mel (born November 24, 1969, Santa Cruz, CA) is a pioneering American big-wave surfer and surf shop owner. Nicknamed “The Condor,” he made his mark at Mavericks and Half Moon Bay, earning 1997 O’Neill Cold Water Classic victory and being voted eighth-best surfer by Surfer Magazine in 1998.
He towed into a 53-foot monster at Mavericks in 1999 and later won the 2011/12 Big Wave World Tour, the 2013 Mavericks Invitational, and the 2021 “Ride of the Year”.
Mel transitioned to WSL commentator and Big Wave Tour commissioner after retiring in 2013, championing the sport with insightful commentary. In 2022, he was inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame. Continually active in the surf community, he balances big-wave pursuits, shop ownership, and family life.
